  1.         CHANGES TO RED BARON/A10
  2.         
  3.         Red Baron and A10 were originally written when the average
  4.         PC was much slower than today's fastest machines.  Because
  5.         of this the original versions of these programs run too 
  6.         quickly or exhibit other flaws on many fast machines.  
  7.         Changes have been made to this version to allow the programs
  8.         to run smoothly and correctly on any machine available.

  10.  
  11.         INSTALLING THE MANUAL
  12.  
  13.         If you install the manual and the game both from Windows 
  14.         you should encounter no problems, regardless of whether you 
  15.         have chosen MINIMUM or FULL installation, even if you later 
  16.         choose to run the game from DOS.  However, if you first 
  17.         install Red Baron/A10 from DOS and later install the manual 
  18.         from Windows, you must be careful to choose the same size  
  19.         install that you used for the game.  The manual is always
  20.         run from the CD, so your installation choice will not 
  21.         affect the operation of the online manual.  However, 
  22.         choosing a different install size when you install the 
  23.         manual may result in some files being changed and render
  24.         Red Baron/A10 unplayable.  If this should happen, simply 
  25.         delete the Red Baron/A10 files from your hard drive and 
  26.         reinstall.

  28.         RED BARON/A10 AND WINDOWS
  29.  
  30.         Red Baron/A10 was originally a DOS application, and while we
  31.         have provided PIFs and icons to allow you to run under 
  32.         Windows, some systems will not be able to properly execute
  33.         Red Baron/A10 from Windows.  If you have any problems 
  34.         running your program under Windows, we highly recommend you 
  35.         run under DOS.  Complete instructions for installing and 
  36.         running Red Baron/A10 under DOS can be found in the 
  37.         technical support portion of the printed documentation.

  39.         MEMORY CONCERNS
  40.  
  41.         Some memory managers may be unable to load both CD ROM drivers
  42.         and compression drivers into high memory.  Because of this it
  43.         may not be possible to free enough conventional memory to run
  44.         Red Baron/A10 while your CD ROM drive is enabled.  It may be
  45.         necessary to run Red Baron/A10 from a bootdisk that does not 
  46.         enable your CD ROM drive.  Complete instructions are in the 
  47.         technical support section of the printed documentation.

  49.         THE MANUAL AND 16 COLOR WINDOWS
  50.         
  51.         We highly recommend that you view the online manual in 256
  52.         colors.  While the manual supports 16 color systems, the 
  53.         quality of the artwork will be greatly diminished on these 
  54.         systems, and certain color plates may not be displayed. 
  55.         Most VGA cards are shipped with appropriate drivers to 
  56.         support Windows in 256 color mode.  Consult your Windows 
  57.         manual on how to use setup to change video drivers.

  59.         THE NEED FOR SPEED
  60.  
  61.         If the frame rate seems too low or the program doesn't 
  62.         seem to be running smoothly, there are several things to
  63.         try.  First, if you are running under Windows, try running
  64.         Red Baron/A10 under DOS, following the instructions found in 
  65.         the printed documentation.  Reducing the detail of the 
  66.         simulation will also improve frame rate, as will turning
  67.         the ground detail "off" during combat.  The detail selections
  68.         may be called up by pressing F10 at any time from the sim.
  69.         Also, smoothness will be increased by sliding the Time Scale
  70.         slider slightly to the left.  This will slow the overall
  71.         time rate of the game slightly, but will decrease the time
  72.         that passes between frames and smooth out jumpiness.

  77.         of issues are available in the printed documentation 
  78.         included in this package.  Please refer to these hints 
  79.         should you have any problems installing or running

  90. RED BARON COMMON PROBLEMS
  91.  
  92. Problem: The cursor moves around by itself.
  93. Solution: You may have a joystick port in the computer with no joystick 
  94. hooked up. Press ALT-J several times to disable the joystick in the program. 
  95. There may also be conflicting joystick ports in the computer, or you may be 
  96. using an older mouse driver. Press ALT-D to toggle the mouse off.

  98. If these steps fails to help, check the MSCDEX line in your 
  99. AUTOEXEC.BAT file and make sure that it has the following parameters: 
  100. /M:10 /E If they are not there, make a boot disk and add the parameters on it. 
  101. An example MSCDEX line would look like the following:

  103. LH C:\DOS\MSCDEX.EXE /D:MSCD001 /M:10 /E
  104.  
  105. Problem: You see random yellow and red spots when flying.
  106. Solution: This is normal, these are actually flares being fired from the 
  107. ground.
